Why Gavin Stewart Started The Academy

Learning music is a lifelong journey. Gavin Stewart Piano Academy began with a clear belief: every pupil has the potential to make meaningful progress when they receive the right guidance, encouragement and space to develop at their own pace.

Gavin was inspired by the teachers and mentors who shaped his own musical journey. Their encouragement showed him how much influence a thoughtful piano teacher can have, not only on a pupil’s playing, but also on their confidence, curiosity and willingness to keep learning.

He founded the academy to offer the same kind of positive, personalised support to others.

Since 2008, Gavin has taught more than 100 pupils, including young beginners, adult learners, returning pianists and pupils preparing for graded examinations. Over time, the academy has developed into a dedicated online piano school built around individual tuition, clear progression and genuine musical understanding.

Online Piano Teaching Built Around The Individual

No two pupils arrive with the same experience, interests or ambitions. Some want to learn their first piece. Others are returning after many years away, preparing for an exam or looking for more advanced musical guidance.

For this reason, lessons are not delivered through a rigid, one-size-fits-all programme.

Gavin adapts each pupil’s learning pathway around:

  • Their current experience and ability

  • Their musical interests

  • Their personal goals

  • Their learning pace

  • Their available practice time

  • The areas in which they need the most support

Lessons take place live online, allowing pupils to ask questions, watch demonstrations and receive immediate feedback. Learning from home also means pupils can work at the instrument they use for their own practice.

The online format supports consistency while removing the need to travel. It makes personalised tuition accessible to pupils who want expert guidance wherever they are based.

Inspire, Empower And Create

Gavin’s teaching philosophy is built around three principles: Inspire, Empower and Create.

These ideas guide how lessons are planned, how progress is supported and how pupils are encouraged to develop their own relationship with music.

Meet Gavin Stewart

Hello, I’m Gavin. I started Gavin Stewart Piano Academy because I believe everyone has the potential to make music.

Over the years, I have taught pupils at many different stages, from complete beginners taking their first steps to experienced players refining their technique and expression. I have also worked with children, adult learners, returning pianists and pupils preparing for examinations.

My teaching style is relaxed, supportive and carefully tailored to the individual. I want pupils to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and exploring new ideas, while still receiving the structure and guidance they need to progress.

My qualifications and professional memberships include:

  • BMus Honours from Edinburgh Napier University

  • Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

  • Member of EPTA UK

  • Member of The Curious Piano Teacher

These qualifications and memberships support my continued professional development and help me remain engaged with current thinking in piano pedagogy and music education.

I am also passionate about mentoring new piano teachers. Sharing practical experience with other educators encourages reflection on my own teaching and supports the wider development of thoughtful, pupil-centred music education.

What Makes Gavin Stewart Piano Academy Different

The academy combines professional expertise with a personal, pupil-focused approach.

Personalised One-To-One Teaching

Every lesson is adapted to the pupil’s goals, musical interests and learning needs. There is no standard programme that every learner must follow.

Clear Structure Without Unnecessary Pressure

Lessons provide direction and steady progression while respecting the pupil’s pace. Exams are available where helpful, but they are not compulsory.

Creativity Alongside Technique

Technical development matters, but it is not treated as the only goal. Pupils are also encouraged to understand, interpret and enjoy the music they play.

Practical Support Between Lessons

Gavin helps pupils learn how to practise, not simply what to practise. Clear priorities, manageable goals and short demonstration videos may be used to support progress where appropriate.

Qualified And Reflective Teaching

Gavin’s academic training, professional memberships and work mentoring other teachers reflect an ongoing commitment to high teaching standards and thoughtful professional development.

An Online-First Learning Experience

The academy is built around live online tuition. Lessons are structured specifically for remote learning, with clear communication, real-time feedback and guidance adapted to the pupil’s home setup.

A Mission Centred On Lifelong Musical Growth

Our mission is to help pupils become confident, creative and independent musicians through personalised online piano tuition.

This means supporting more than short-term results.

We want pupils to develop:

  • Secure musical foundations

  • Confidence in their own ability

  • Effective learning and practice habits

  • Curiosity about how music works

  • Freedom to express themselves through playing

  • A lasting enjoyment of music

Progress may look different for every pupil. For one learner, it may mean playing a first piece independently. For another, it may mean returning to a much-loved instrument, completing an examination or performing with greater confidence.

Each of these achievements matters.

Experience And Professional Credibility

  • Gavin brings more than 15 years of piano teaching experience to the academy and has guided more than 100 pupils through different stages of musical development.

  • His experience includes teaching:

  • Complete beginners

  • Young children

  • Teenagers

  • Adult learners

  • Returning pianists

  • Pupils preparing for graded examinations

  • More experienced musicians developing technique and expression

  • His academic training at Edinburgh Napier University and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire provides a strong musical foundation. His memberships of EPTA UK and The Curious Piano Teachers support continued engagement with professional standards, teaching practice and piano pedagogy.

  • This combination of experience, formal training and ongoing professional development informs the guidance every pupil receives.
